One in Two: A Manchester Cancer Research Podcast
With one in two of us receiving a cancer diagnosis at some point during our lives, it has never been more important to improve the outcomes for people affected by cancer.
To celebrate the impactful work of cancer researchers in Manchester, today on World Cancer Day (4th February 2023), we are proud to be launching our first special episode: Prostate cancer with Professor Robert Bristow: Is globalisation the future of cancer research?
Rob is the Director of the Manchester Cancer Research Centre, Chief Academic Officer at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and Professor of Cancer Studies at the University of Manchester. In this episode, we talk to him about his research in prostate cancer alongside the broader cancer research environment in Manchester, the importance of teamwork and team science and research, and delivering impact through internationalisation.
This World Cancer Day, it is a great pleasure to be talking about prostate cancer research and internationalisation on the One in Two podcast. Manchester is a place of teams, whether that’s in football or whether that’s in cancer. And to really be successful, we need to keep on driving that type of culture and that’s what’s going to win the war on cancer, not only locally but also internationally. So it’s a great place to be!

Professor Robert Bristow joined The University of Manchester as Director of the Manchester Cancer Research Centre (MCRC) in August 2017 with a remit to developing a new cancer strategy for Manchester with a cancer team science approach. His research group, Translational Oncogenomics at the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute primarily focuses on tumour hypoxia, DNA damage signalling and repair in tumours, and the genomics of prostate cancer progression and cancer treatment response. He is particularly interested in novel clinical trials that intensify cancer therapy to prostate cancer patients whose tumours harbour aggressive genetic changes and hypoxic sub-regions.
In addition to his roles as the Director of the Manchester Cancer Research Centre, Rob is also the Director of the Cancer Research UK Manchester Centre, Director of Cancer Research UK RadNet Manchester, Director of the International Alliance for Cancer Early Detection (ACED) in Manchester, Chief Academic Officer at The Christie and Senior Group Leader at the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute.
