Cakes and Cycles: Fundraising for Re-Write Cancer
On the 22nd September 2022, colleagues across the Manchester Cancer Research Centre (MCRC), Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute (CRUK MI), The University of Manchester and The Christie came together at the Oglesby Cancer Research Building, to fundraise for Re-Write Cancer.
In addition to being exceptional cancer researchers, it comes as no surprise that many of our colleagues across the MCRC partnership are also highly talented bakers and cyclists.
A huge thank you to everyone who generously supported and donated on the day: through a bake sale and cycle relay challenge we raised an incredible total of £442.20.
What is Re-Write Cancer
In a partnership between Cancer Research UK, The Christie and The University of Manchester, Re-Write Cancer is raising funds to support the new cancer research facility on the site of the former Paterson Building.
The new building will bring together the largest concentration of scientists, doctors and nurses in Europe to collaborate and accelerate progress for cancer patients. Read more about this project and the innovative work that will take place there on our website.
Cookies, cupcakes, chocolate and more!
From ‘tumour environment’ rocky road cakes to ‘DNA’ cheesecake brownies, we saw an amazing display of cakes, kindly baked and donated by generous colleagues.
Winners of the bake off were the Biscoff Millionaire Traybake by Rebecca Taylor and Re-Write Cancer Cupcakes by Claire Trinder – voted for by colleagues, the general public and MCRC Director Rob Bristow!
A huge thank you to the Worker Bee café for kindly donating some lovely prizes for the Bake Off winners.
Cycling for Re-Write Cancer
Eight enthusiastic cyclers cycled as far as possible, in a relay team, working together to hit key distance targets related to cancer research and the new build.
Huge congratulations to the team who managed to hit a target of 50 miles!
Distance targets:
- 2 miles: Every two minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with cancer
- 10 miles: The new cancer centre will have 10 state-of-the-art laboratory blocks
- 12 miles: The height of the new cancer centre is equivalent to 12 double decker buses stacked high
- 20 miles: For the new cancer centre, 20% cement replacement material has been used resulting in significant CO2 saving
- 26k miles: The new cancer centre will cover a floor area of 26,614m² – almost the size of four football pitches
- 37 miles: There are around 375,000 new cancer cases in the UK every year
- 40 miles: Cancer survival is improving and has doubled in the last 40 years in the UK
- 45 miles: Amount of lab space 4,500m2 – the size of 23 tennis courts
- 50 miles: One in two of us will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in our lives
