Professor Robert Bristow, Centre Director
Professor Robert Bristow joined University of Manchester as Director of the Manchester Cancer Research Centre (MCRC) in August 2017 with a remit to develop a new cancer strategy for Manchester with a cancer Team Science approach.
His primary research interests are in tumour hypoxia, DNA damage signalling and repair in tumours, and the genomics of prostate cancer progression and cancer treatment response. He is particularly interested in novel clinical trials that intensify cancer therapy to prostate cancer patients whose tumours harbour aggressive genetic changes and hypoxic sub-regions.
In addition to his role as Director of the MCRC, Rob is also Co-Director of the Cancer Research UK (CRUK) Manchester Centre, Co-Director of ACED Manchester, Co-Director of CRUK RadNet Manchester, Chief Academic Officer at The Christie, Senior Group Leader at the CRUK Manchester Institute, and Professor of Cancer Studies at The University of Manchester.
Professor Nic Jones, Director of Strategic Initiatives
The inaugural Director of the MCRC between 2006 and 2017, Professor Nic Jones oversaw the development of the MCRC before handing over to Professor Robert Bristow in 2017.
Nic now works as the Director of Strategic Initiatives, overseeing the redevelopment of the Paterson Building, which was devastated in April 2017 by a fire and displaced researchers from the CRUK Manchester Institute to the Alderley Park site in Cheshire.
Nic also held the position of CRUK’s Chief Scientist between 2011-2016. In 2020, Nic was made a CRUK Trustee, and sits on the Charity’s Governing Council to provide the advice, guidance and support to ensure it meets the goals of beating cancer sooner.
